Words From A Poet: Letting Go Doesn’t Get Easier But We Get Stronger

Creating an adoption plan for our firstborn, Carly, was a major challenge for us. Tyler and I were only 15 when we found out about being pregnant. Anxiety quickly took over me, wondering how I would raise a child with someone who was just my boyfriend at the time.

After joining the cast on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, Tyler and I made the decision to set up an adoption plan for our daughter on the way. And, looking back on that journey, I am grateful for it being aired because I believe that it gave viewers a true and authentic look into how adoption really works.

Birth parents go through a period of grief and loss, that’s fairly obvious to assume. Carly is 13 now and, while the years continue to pass, thinking about the “could’ve been” moments doesn’t get easier.

Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis are the adoptive parents of Carly who agreed to an open adoption plan with us. As she grew up were able to have in-person visits, every two years, over a three-day period.

Below is a poem from Tyler, coping with the heartbreak that comes with adoption.

I never wanted to let you go, understand

I wanted to wrap you in my arms forever

Like your fingers around my pinky

In the palm of your little hand

I reminisce of your beautiful face

Swaddled in a that baby blanket

So innocent…& guess what?

I still have that baby blanket…

It’s folded in the chest by my bed

& sometimes I unravel it

Just to put it around my neck

& pretend it’s you that I’m holding instead

Because everyday I wake up with you beating in my heart & consuming my head
