Looking in the mirror to see skin that is happy is a good feeling. After all, who doesn’t love having an even, acne-free complexion that’s hydrated and glowing? Although, achieving and/or maintaining these results can be challenging. With so many procedures on the market, it’s necessary that you do your research and talk to your dermatologist about the best approach for you to take. One option that your doctor might consider is mirconeedling. Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses very tiny, sterilized needles which prick the skin to treat imperfections and stimulate collagen production.
Is Microneedling For You?

The ideal candidate for microneedling is looking to generate new collagen and skin tissue to smooth, firm, and tone their skin. If you’ve tried it all – at home remedies, facials, chemical peels, etc. – and haven’t gotten the results you anticipated, then microneedling might be the right fit before indulging in something more expensive such as laser therapy.
Benefits include:
- reducing the appearance of scars, including acne scars
- reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- reducing enlarged pores
- reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, or dark spots
- smoothing uneven skin tone
- improving skin elasticity
- reducing the appearance of stretch marks
- reducing the appearance of scars
- promoting hair growth in people with alopecia
However, not everyone is a perfect fit for this treatment.
If you:
- have certain skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema
- have open wounds or active acne
- have had radiation therapy recently
- have a history of skin scars
then you might have to take another route. So, make sure to consult with your dermatologist before scheduling your first session.
For Your Skin AND Your Wallet

Microneedling is less expensive than laser treatments, costing anywhere from $200 to $800 per session. And, depending on the severity of your skin your doctor may recommend four to six treatments in total.
This is considered a cosmetic or aestethic procedure so typically insurance does not cover it but, your doctor might be able to structure a payment plan for you.
What To Expect

Prepare for your appointment by talking with your doctor first. You may need to stop taking certain medications well in advance to the treatment.
Approximately 45 minutes to an hour before, the doctor will apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to numb the skin during the microneedling process which in full can take about two hours.
All in all, microneedling encourages you skin to produce more collagen.
As we age or if we get injured, our skin loses collagen. The tiny pinpricks cause slight injury to the skin and it’s response is by making new collagen-rich tissue giving you a more even tone and texture to your face. This new tissue and additional colllagen can also make the skin firmer.
The recovery time is very minimal. In fact, if you’re comfortable, you can go back to work or school after your procedure. But, it’s important that you let your skin heal before applying makeup or sweating intensely.
During your first week of recovery avoid:
- sun exposure
- skin care products with alpha-hydroxy acids and retinol
- makeup
- sweating
And, aid in your healing process by:
- staying hydrated
- using an antioxidant serum
- using a cooling mask
- using collagen-stimulating peptides
Following [multiple] treatments, your skin may continue to increase collagen production for up to three to six months.
If you’re looking to take that next step in your skin journey, pay a visit to your dermatologist and see if they agree that micrneedling is it for you. It’s far more effective than the at-home rollers you can purchase in-store and will have you looking hydrated and glowing without the need for make-up.
